It’s a difficult, challenging time for the newspaper business right now. With the growing popularity and technology of the Internet, newspapers, TV and other businesses have had to change course to make up for lost revenue. The Daily News has made many changes recently, mostly with our Web presence. If you haven’t checked out our Web site, visit www.jdnews.com and see the changes for yourself. The biggest change is that our reporters are trying to get the information to the people quicker by posting more ”Breaking News” on our site as often as possible, and by posting stories (or the beginnings of what will be a larger story to come) more often. The idea is to get the news to the people quicker and more efficiently. We also post videos much more frequently on anything from interviews about the recent shark bite at Topsail to the Gospel sing at Hubert to the Beaufort 4th of July Parade. And, don’t forget, we also offer our entire paper online for subscribers.
Pretty much everything is changing around here at The Daily News. Job duties, hours, co-workers, the building is being repainted … a lot is changing. Hopefully for the better. But, as we go through this change, it is a stressful transition for many of us. Now is a good time to make any suggestions as to what you, the readers, would like to see in our paper (printed or online).
I have to admit, I am not good with change. In fact, I hate it. Most of the time. The only good change I can think of was how drastically my life changed since I’ve had my daughter. That was a welcome change to me. This one is even more difficult and frustrating at times. I don’t like being stressed. My mind starts to wander, or disappear for that matter. I have already ran over my cell phone and my sunglasses with my car. So, now if I am missing anything I look in my driveway under my car. Hopefully, I can catch it before I pull out and run over it. I was looking for those sunglasses for days too. There they were crushed to oblivion in my driveway. And, my cell phone was still in tact, but is now a play phone for Kayla. It actually still works though, but the screen is totally busted. Hopefully, Kayla isn’t calling someone in Singapore right now. The battery should run out soon.
The Internet has affected a lot of things in this world. Some good, some bad. Newspapers must go in a whole new direction, but still offer and focus on its print edition as well as online. It’s a challenge. I assure you that the people here at The Daily News work extremely hard (too hard sometimes), but always with the public in mind and what the public would like to see.
Feel free to leave some suggestions. Now’s a good time as any to have them heard and toss them around. First and foremost, what we love most about our jobs is the fact that we get to inform the public about things and tell people’s stories. Take the time to go to www.jdnews.com too, and see what we have to offer. And make sure you click on Max or go to www.maxmag.com. That site has a great amount of information: local entertainment listings, movie reviews, local entertainment stories, national entertainment news, local restaurant reviews, tattoos, and more. I’m sure you would find that site interesting too.
